Software Defined Radio
For decades, Harris has been a leading provider of communications equipment and systems. Today, Harris is leveraging this experience to offer proven technologies through the design and development of Software Defined Radios and programmable modems for a wide range of applications. Harris has a rich history of Software Defined Radio (SDR) development dating back to 1988 with the production of the Harris RF-5000 radio. As the evolution to full digital radio systems continues, Harris' SDR capabilities remain at the forefront of the industry. We are also conducting studies investigating SDRs as the future for commercial aviation and NASA space exploration activities, as well as conducting research and development in areas such as Mobile Ad Hoc Networking, high-capacity radio systems, and incorporating advanced antenna technologies within an integrated SDR solution.

Harris' Software Defined Radio platforms are adaptable to our customer's current and future specifications. Our SDRs exhibit portability across platforms, reuse of common implementations, dynamic configurability as well as reconfigurability among: components, waveforms, and processing paths. SDRs can even make use of "Plug-n-Play" components. Many Harris Software Defined Radio platforms are designed and developed utilizing the Software Communication Architecture (SCA) infrastructure specifications developed by the US DoD Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) for radio communication.

The hardware is flexible, allowing for operation independent of standards, protocols, and bandwidths. The baseline technologies use Integrated Circuit (IC) technologies that have non specified architectural components. This allows microprocessors to perform at various user-controlled speeds, and to maintain a flexible architecture and memory size, and utilize a variety of other components. The IC can also be changed dynamically, creating different hardware combinations using Harris-developed, software-controlled programmable modem technology and waveforms.
