The Electro-Optics COE has a tremendous range of experience, capabilities, and research interests, with proven technology solutions spanning more than 30 years. Some of the very first patents on Acousto-Optics were generated by the Harris Electro-Optics team. Today, with over 44 patents in the electro-optics field, the E-O COE has a product list that includes: Q-switches, cavity dumpers, mode lockers, acousto-optic modulators, beam deflectors, wave guides, wave lockers, spectrum analyzers, transponders, integrated fiber-optic components, and several other specialized devices. In addition, fiber communications activities span the range from multi-mode avionics data link engineering and design, to short and long-haul WDM communications data link development, design, and testing.
In combination with work performed for the government and other commercial companies, the COE team independently researches new solutions for the telecom and defense industries. Some of the group's current research and technology interests are:
|
- Fiber Optic devices and technologies
- EDFA (fiber) Technologies
- High resolution scanners
- Reconfigurable WDM Test Beds
- Long-Reach and Long-Haul Fiber Communication Transponders
- Analog Fiber Optic links: coherent and direct-detect
- Ti-diffusion and APE Lithium Niobate Waveguides
- Free-Space Optics
|
- Special RF signal analysis and Extremely Sensitive Receivers
- RF-channelized receiver technology
- High Resolution Scanning and Recording Systems
- GHz bandwidth analog recording
- Wideband EO modulators
- Optical signal processing
- Acousto-optic technology
- Bragg cells

Virtually everything the Electro-Optics group needs in order to perform research, design, development and testing of new solutions is in-house. With a heavy investment in state-of-the-art optical communications and electronic equipment, the team at the COE has the right tools for the job. Housed within a 22,000 square foot building are ten optics laboratories, three electronic laboratories, and over 4,000 square feet of optical component fabrication facilities enabling grinding, polishing, optical surface metrology, vacuum-deposition, reactive-ion milling and bonding, and high-precision, specialty machining.

High-performance, military-hardened, custom... all adjectives describing why the Electro-Optics COE is well-known in the industry. The Electro-Optics group has developed a large range of optical components and technologies, including classical high-end lens design, holographic and Diffractive Optical Elements (DOE), and Gradient Index (GRIN) lens design. The Electro-Optics group is a world-leader in military-hardened, micro-optic designs. Military environments demand exceptional components. Our range of rugged and high-performance products are only possible through concurrent engineering practices of analysis and design, combining the skills of our mechanical packaging specialists and electro-optic engineers. Packaging of optical components and sub-systems for rugged environments is an inherent part of the COE's design process, from conceptualization to end-product.
