CMMI® Maturity Level 3
Harris Corporation’s Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD) was officially appraised at Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI®) Maturity Level 3 on July 31, 2008. An independent and SEI-authorized High Maturity Lead Appraiser led a team of trained assessors using the SEI Standard CMMI® Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPISM) to assess GCSD compliance with the CMMI® model for Development and Integrated Product and Process Development, version 1.2 (CMMI®–DEV+IPPD v1.2). The appraisal measured process and product excellence using an integrated set of processes applied across the GCSD functional organizations.
CMMI® Maturity Level 3 organizations have demonstrated that they are more productive, have fewer delivered defects, have lower risk for development, and more consistently meet cost and schedule objectives. The CMMI® Level 3 rating is a distinction that clearly demonstrates to our customers that we are fully committed to high-level process improvements that assure the delivery of superior product, system and service solutions. This maturity level is increasingly becoming a competitive differentiator on many government programs and is consistent with the Harris culture of continuous improvement and commitment to excellence.
As a licensed organization of the SEI Partner Network, Harris improves processes through proactive application of industry standards and through feedback from continuous assessments of process compliance and effectiveness at the program and organizational levels. Organizational processes are integrated into a set of essential, cross-functional processes against which compliance is regularly verified and reported on all programs. Periodic process assessments are conducted, both internal and external, to judge the level of implementation and institutionalization. The improvement process initiatives are guided by an executive level Process Council and executed through a Process Group.
Since 1984, the Carnegie Mellon® Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has served the nation as a federally funded research and development center. The SEI staff has advanced engineering principles and practices and has served as a national resource in engineering, computer security, and process improvement. As part of Carnegie Mellon University, which is well known for its highly rated programs in computer science and engineering, the SEI operates at the leading edge of technical innovation. The SEI advances engineering and related disciplines to ensure the development and operation of systems with predictable and improved cost, schedule, and quality.
