Modernization—The Lowest-Risk Approach to the NAS Voice Switch (NVS)
Voice communications are critical to the FAA’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) services, which ensure the safe, orderly, and efficient flow of air traffic. Voice switches play a key role within the ATC communications system by automatically configuring and controlling communications between service providers and users. As the FAA works on planning and implementation of NextGen to meet the growing demands of 21st Century air travel, the NAS Voice Switch (NVS) program will address the voice communications requirements of the future including the replacement of the existing voice switch platforms, some of which are more than 20 years old. These switches are unable to support expansion requirements, are obsolete and costly to maintain, and cannot support critical NextGen capabilities. 02/09
