AN/GSC-52 GMD DSCS Terminals
Harris was awarded the AN/GSC-52 Modernization (52 Mod) Program in May 1998 by the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM). The primary purpose of the program is to modernize and extend the life of the existing fixed and vanized Tri-Service AN/GSC-52 State-of-the-Art Medium Terminals (SAMTs) for another 15 years. Major program objectives include upgrade of all electronic components, improved system performance, increased communications capabilities, enhanced control and monitoring, reduced life cycle costs, increased availability, and increased commonality with other Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS) strategic terminals. By meeting these program objectives, the warfighter’s ability to communicate with the sustaining base during war or contingency operations via Department of Defense (DOD) Super High Frequency (SHF) satellites will be greatly enhanced.

Harris is also upgrading the AN/FSC-78 (HT), and AN/GSC-39B (MT) terminals with the improved Control Monitor and Alarm (CMA) subsystem and increased converter capacity. At the conclusion of the 52 Mod Program, all DSCS strategic terminals, located at sites worldwide, will have the same principal computer/human interface (i.e., the CMA subsystem) and, with the exception of some antenna-unique items, will be supported by the same logistics pipeline.

An additional aspect of this program is the development and installation of modified terminals in support of the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) Communications Network (GCN). Harris will design and deliver modified AN/GSC-52 terminals housed in a robust, seismically rated High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) shelter. The first three systems will be delivered and operational by September 2004. These systems will play an integral part in the overall success of the nation’s Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS).
