Missile Defense
Harris has been a key player in the Missile Defense initiatives of the United States for over 15 years. From our participation in early Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) studies, to today’s deployment of a Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) capability for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Harris has led the way in the design and development of advanced communications systems for ground, interceptor and space-based communications

Communication Networks

Harris is involved in the design of the terrestrial communications networks supporting the GMD and other MDA programs. Our expertise is centered on LAN/WAN network architecture, commercial network product selection and integration, and the modeling and simulation of complex communications networks.

Satellite Communications

Harris is an Industry leading supplier of ground, sea and space-based satellite communication or SATCOM systems. For Missile Defense, our DSCS terminals provide the backbone communications links to multiple remote MDA sites including Fort Greely and Earickson Air Force Station in Alaska. We provide the commercial SATCOM connectivity to the Sea-Based X-band Radar (SBX) platform. Our OS/COMET® satellite command and control product is in use today for the Iridium and GPS satellite constellations, and is being considered for multiple MDA applications. Our programmable modem and anti-scintillation modem products offer advanced yet flexible waveform implementations for the evolving missile defense mission.

Interceptor Communications

Our flagship Missile Defense program currently is the In-Flight Interceptor Communications Systems (IFICS) Data Terminal developed for Northrop-Grumman in support of the GMD program. Harris is also designing in-flight data links for the next generation Kinetic Energy interceptors. We have designed and developed interceptor communications avionics, providing for full end-to-end interceptor communications.

Systems Engineering and Support

Harris provides systems engineering services and support to other key Missile Defense programs including the Missile Defense Integration and Operations Center (MDIOC) in Colorado Springs, and the MDA National Team in Crystal City, VA. Harris is poised and ready to offer additional customer support wherever and whenever it may be needed.
